Another Chicago Picture

Blogger says I can post pictures with an email post by attaching the picture. I guess that means I cannot control where they go in the post. Let’s see if it works. Here is another picture from Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport. This picture is taken in the connecting Habitrail walkway between the ‘B’ gates and the “E’ and ‘F’ gates. I liked the cloud reflections so I snapped the shot with my Canon G9.

Turning the Clock Back

In preparation for going to Botswana, I am starting to get up earlier.  There is a nine hour time difference, so I want to try to pick up a few of those hours before I make the trip.  I managed to get up at 4:24 this morning…  Just in time for an early morning note to the blog via email.  So, good morning!

Building Mountains

Today was a good day on The Mountain. I managed to do a short hike this morning for some film photography with the Hasselblad. I also captured this image (with the Canon G9) of the MMWD's work building the mountain to meet their vision on the Gravity trail:

'Mt.

This new drainage pipe will eliminate the big pool that used to form on the uphill side of the road when we got a lot of rain. I'm sure it is the right thing to do for the road, but the pool will be missed -- It's always been a sight to see the redwood trees springing out of the big pool.

The rest of my photos are on film. Mostly black and white, but one on Velvia ISO 50. The Velvia is 7 years expired. It will be interesting to see how it turns out. The B&W was TMAX 100, and it is on its way to Dwayne's as I type.

I also got a great 6+ miles running in this evening. 60 degrees and a foggy sunset. Couldn't be better.

On Monday my mountain trail takes me to Botswana. I'm torn. It's a trip of a lifetime --though for business. And, I have to leave my paradise here. More to come on this topic I'm sure...

As you know, tomorrow is Lori's birthday. Of course you knew that... It's a (or should be a) national holiday! It's all about her tomorrow!

Night night!

Walking in Memphis

With due respect to Marc Cohn, today I was walking in Memphis. My flight home was at 7:55 a.m., so I got up early and went down to Beale Street for a few photos, then on to the Mississippi River for a few more. So, we start with what Beale Street looks like if you have been there all night... I saw two young men come out of a bar that appeared to be open at 5 a.m.--I'm sure they were serving coffee. Here it is:

Beale Street

As the two young adults came out of the bar, one was holding the other up. I thought it was mutual support, but it turned out, one was just a bit more bent than the other. Luckily, one of them knew which way they were going, so they weaved their way up Beale Street.

BTW, my lens was fogged by the humidity, not real fog. Here's a closer look at BB King's sign in the fog:

Beale Street

And here is a clearer shot of the street. You couldn't take this shot at 10pm the night before, I would imagine. Luckily for me, I was sound asleep at 10pm the night before.

Beale Street

Most of the people I saw on Beale at 5am were homeless. The longer I was there, the more they came up to ask for money. "I'm not a panhandler, but do you have $2 you could give me?" was the gist of most of their communication. Though, Warren did offer to educate me on the local sights. Of course, I was just taking pictures so they weren't too impressed. As the pressure to produce something for them increased, I decided it was time to move on.

I went down to the river for some night/cityscape shots. Here is one of the Memphis cityscape:

And one of the Mississippi River:

The bright light is a tug pushing a barge. I was able to capture some pretty decent shots and then headed for the airport for an on-time departure (thanks SkyWest) and an on time arrival home (thanks United).

This evening I shot the sunset on Mount Tam using film. Yep, just film. I didn't even bring the G9 with me. Just the light meter and the Hasselblad. I shot a few B&W shots with TMAX100 and a few colors with Velvia 50. It will be interesting to see how they turn out. No chimping could be done, so I can only hope they are good...

BTW, it's nice to be home. Lori made me a great dinner tonight!!

That's it for tonight. C U 2morrow.

Time Portal

Today was a travel day, and tonight I am in Memphis. There are no mountains in Memphis...

I did visit the time portal in Chicago. Enter at one end and you are magically transported to a new terminal on the other side. Very exciting!

Happy Birthday Mom!

Today is my mother's birthday. Happy birthday Mom!!!

I thought about putting that in the last post, but decided she rated a post of her own. I talked with her and my dad today. After wishing her a happy birthday and a little catching up, she passed me off to talk to my dad. She wanted to finish her birthday ice cream sunday. Go figure, the sunday had priority over her loving son! Just kidding Mom! I wouldn't want my birthday sunday to turn into a birthday milkmonday either! :-)

Dad's got himself a new lathe, but he can't use it yet. He got a good deal on it on ebay, drove 750 miles (one way) to pick it up in his Honda Peak Bagger (or something like that) and it has a 3-phase motor. So, he still needs a new motor to make it work...

This is new insight on my own quirks. Why do I have to do it myself? Why do I save $50 to spend a $100 plus 8 hours to avoid calling a plumber or buying a working tool! Hey, I don't know the answer, but I think I come by those features honestly! My dad's choices make perfect sense to me.

Blogger says I should capitalize sunday, but I just can't do it. An ice cream sunday is just not Sunday to me. I'll bet Dad would agree with me.

Night night again! :-)

Mountains are the bomb!

First of all, another black and white film picture from our August trip to Colorado for Pikes Peak Ascent. We climbed Mt. Democrat on the Thursday before the race and camped at Kite Lake. That gave us two nights above 12,000 feet and a climb to 14,000 feet. Good for acclimatizing to the altitude, and actually not all that hard. The climb took a couple of hours, but that is because we took our time. It was harder than climbing Mt. Tamalpais, because of the altitude, but otherwise it was comparable. I've never felt dizzy on Mt. Tam, for example. Here's the picture Lori took of me and Cookie.

She is such a good dog!

Tonight Lori asked me to dig out a photo from our 2007 vacation to the Grand Tetons and to Yellowstone. While visiting the Tetons we camped at a secret campsite, that had a view of the Cathedral Group of the Tetons, when an evening storm started rolling in from the west. I had hoped to shoot the sunset, but this didn't look too promising at first. But as the storm crossed the mountain range, it started to break up. We ended up getting only light rain, and here is the view we had:

Grand Tetons

If you click on the photo you will see a larger version that has a bit more detail in the darker foreground. The original actually has much more detail than that, but these are the limitations of blogging -- and my willingness to put this photo on the Internet. In either case, the beauty of the mountains speak for themselves.

Night, night!
